Case reviews: 28 day reviews, historic case ("cold case") reviews and pre-Court reviews
Many police forces (and other forensic science providers) have found that the specialist approach of Forensic Access is what is needed to assist with particularly difficult or high profile cases. Our attention to detail, keen focus on science and the experience and skills of our forensic scientists makes us the ideal forensic provider for these types of cases and reviews.
We assist forces with case reviews at many different stages of the life of a case:
- Historic Case Reviews ("cold cases"): Over the last few years our scientists have been instrumental in finding, retrieving and interpreting crucial evidence in some particularly high profile and difficult cold cases. Our scientist’s skills, experience, tenacity and unique approaches to such cases have greatly assisted the progression and conclusion of such cases. We are currently involved in several cold cases directly for the police and in support of other providers.
- Live cases / 28 Day Reviews: quite often it can be useful to have a second opinion on the forensic issues of a major crime case. We can assist with such reviews, even when the case is being worked upon by another provider, giving an independent assessment of the forensic options and, possibly, to advise on an amended strategy or fresh approaches. Our scientific advisors, trained across scientific disciplines, can assist with such reviews at Case Conferences, for example, and prepare reports on their findings.
- Review for Court “robustness”: having a background in forensic defence enables us to assist in the review of completed cases. So as to ensure that all has been done to in order to make a case robust against the defence, Forensic Access scientists can undertake a case review before the case leaves a provider or is returned to the police. Following the review we would prepare a report which may include, for example, what further work may be necessary, or where statements may need additional work.
Our forensic scientists are currently working on, and have worked on some of the highest profile cases in the UK, often finding, recovering, analysing and interpreting forensic evidence many years after the crime occurred and after items had been examined by other forensic science providers.
