Specialism: forensic science training for police, scenes of crime officers, scientists, forensic medical examiners and support staff
Yvonne started her forensic science career at the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory (MPFSL) in 1986 following a six month industrial placement as a sandwich student. This placement, whilst studying for her bachelor’s degree in Applied Biochemistry at Brunel University, resulted in the publication of a paper in the Journal of Forensic Sciences relating to textile fibres.
She became involved in the delivery of training early on in her career; at first to traffic officers regarding the retrieval and submission of evidence from road traffic accidents and later progressed to training police officers and scenes of crime officers in various roles and visitors to the laboratory. Presentations to the Forensic Science Society and school workshops featured as a break to benchwork. A formal training position followed many years as an examiner at the bench in body fluids and textile fibres, including crime scene attendance. A period of time was spent in the DNA Unit on routine SLP work and a longer time as a Textile Fibres Specialist in the Analytical Department. This period included presentation of evidence at court on both DNA and textile fibres.
Yvonne moved to the Chepstow Laboratory of the Home Office Forensic Science Service in 2001 as a Customer Training Consultant to establish the provision of forensic science training to local police forces.
Forensic Science Training
Yvonne has delivered training courses to a wide range of audiences including police, scenes of crime officers, scientists, forensic medical examiners and support staff. She recently lectured on New Entrants, Professionalism and Customer Awareness and Court Presentation Skills to forensic scientists. As a Customer Trainer she delivered training to Specialist Trained Officers in the correct use of the medical examination kit and use of the early evidence kit. More recently training has been to Forensic Nurse Practitioners who are, in some forces, replacing the use of Forensic Medical Examiners.
She was instrumental in the implementation and training to all police forces in England and Wales regarding the introduction of the New Medical Examination Kit Training Package in collaboration with the ACPO/APS/FSS Working Party. She co-ordinated the launch programme and delivered associated training to specialist officers and forensic medical examiners across England and Wales.
Yvonne continued Customer Training whilst performing the role of Technical Training Advisor to the Volume Crime Business Workstream and Electronic Forensic Science Unit. Although having a background in body fluids and textile fibres Yvonne has been able to utilise her formal training qualifications to facilitate training in areas outside her expertise.
