After that Carl moved on secondment to the Forensic Science Service, where he remained until he retired from the police, then taking on the same post until resignation in August 2007. During this time, much of his work was within the fingerprint chemical treatment field, whilst maintaining his expertise with reviewing cases for defence agencies including the Criminal Cases Review Commission as well as dealing with prosecution cases. He was made an assessor for the Council of the Registration of Forensic Practitioners with the opening of the register for fingerprint chemical treatment, rising to lead assessor, before resigning to take up a post of teaching fingerprints to the Abu Dhabi police.
