Lisa Avenell BSc. (Hons)

Lisa began her career as a forensic biologist with the Forensic Science Service at their London Laboratory in 2002.  As a member of the homicide team, she gained experience in dealing with murder cases and crimes of a most serious nature from early on in her career.  After moving to Forensic Alliance (now LGC Forensics) in 2005 Lisa progressed to the level of Lead Scientist, dealing with a full range of case types involving biological evidence, including a number of high profile and very complex cases.  She was a Registered Forensic Practitioner with the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners (CRFP), until it ceased trading on 31 March 2009.

Lisa’s areas of expertise incorporate:

  • Directing and conducting detailed examination of items such as clothing and weapons for all types of biological evidence;
  • Interpretation of blood patterns on clothing and weapons;
  • Interpretation of DNA profiling results, including complex mixtures of DNA and the results of High Sensitivity Profiling techniques such as Low Copy Number (LCN) and Enhanced 3100 analysis;
  • Assessment and interpretation of scientific findings within the context of the case;
  • Preparation and presentation of written and oral evidence to Courts of Law.

Lisa has a great deal of experience in recovering biological material from components of incendiary/explosive devices (detonated and un-detonated). She also has an avid interest and understanding in the use of non-human DNA evidence in the investigation of crime.
