Steven Rand, BSc, PhD, CBiol, MIBiol
Steven Rand has been practising forensic science since 1970, specialising in cases of violence and sexual assault involving biological and DNA evidence, where his expertise extends to all the latest techniques and methodologies including STR SGM Plus, LCN (low Copy Number) and mt DNA (Mitochondrial DNA) analysis.
Formerly a senior scientist at the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory and senior scientist at the Institute of Legal Medicine, Münster, he became a consultant forensic biologist with Forensic Access in 2002.
He has contributed to and been the co-author of over 70 published scientific papers.
Steve has extensive experience covering:
- investigation of murder and other scenes of crime
- interpretation of bloodstain and other patterns and advising accordingly
- conducting the detailed scientific examination of associated items and samples in the laboratory including:
- blood and other body fluids
- analysis by traditional grouping and DNA profiling, including LCN and mt DNA
- textile fibres and hairs
- damage to clothing etc
- blunt and sharp instruments used as weapons
- assessing the significance of scientific findings within the context of the case
- presenting written and oral evidence in Courts of Law in the United Kingdom and overseas
