Ian Oxley BSc
Specialism: Drugs of abuse, drug valuations and cannabis cultivations
Ian joined the Forensic Science Service (FSS) Wetherby Laboratory in 1980, initially joining a combined drugs and toxicology team as a forensic examiner. After a period as a specialist GCMS operator, providing an analytical service to the site, he progressed to reporting toxicology, drugs and RTA alcohol cases. As a reporting officer he progressed to Senior Forensic Scientist as Site Drugs Lead, working on a range of major drug investigations, attending scenes involving illicit laboratories, tablet production facilities and cannabis cultivations.
Ian helped develop the role of Forensic Advisor as part of the HM Customs contract, providing forensic support and advice in major drugs importations, complex fraud cases and fuel laundering.
He set up, managed and developed an integrated delivery team (drugs, fingerprints, DNA and documents) delivering investigative support to HMRC, SOCA and Counter Terrorism.
He managed a range of forensic delivery teams as Service Delivery Manager, obtaining and maintaining accreditation to the international quality standard ISO 17025.
Ian has trained scientists within the laboratory and for a range of organisations including Magistrates, police and HMRC investigators. He has trained at the National Drugs Expert Witness Course at the West Yorkshire Police Training Centre.
After leaving the FSS Ian worked as a project manager, in a GLP/GMP pharmaceutical analytical company gaining experience of another quality system and as forensic consultant. As a consultant he has carried out work as an expert witness in drugs cases and provided drugs training and support to international students in the UK and in their home country.
