“When animals are abused, people are at risk; when people are abused, animals are at risk.”
This simple, but striking quote from the National Link Coalition (USA) should be in the mind of all investigators. Animal cruelty is rarely isolated and when agencies work together, the cycle of violence can be broken.
Those working within the human sphere, should consider the presence of pets within the family home, or animals at the workplace. Animal investigators should be mindful of the setting from which animals have been recovered. By asking the right questions, and improving cross-reporting, the escalation of acts of cruelty against people and animals can be reduced.
