Firearms and Ballistics Examination
Firearms evidence can be central to the investigation and prosecution or defence of serious criminal offences. The interpretation of firearms and ballistic evidence requires detailed technical knowledge, practical experience with a wide range of weapons, and a clear understanding of how scientific findings should be evaluated within a legal context.
At Forensic Access, our firearms experts provide independent, impartial opinion across all aspects of firearms and ballistic evidence. They are instructed to review evidence, reconstruct events involving the discharge of a weapon, and advise on complex technical issues where the interpretation of firearms evidence is contested or critical to the case.
Our firearms consultants are highly experienced, court-going experts, with extensive backgrounds working within prosecution forensic service providers as well as delivering independent expert services to the defence. Their role is not simply to describe technical findings, but to ensure firearms evidence is properly understood and fairly interpreted.

Scene Reconstruction

Firearms-related scene reconstruction can provide valuable insight into the events surrounding the discharge of a weapon. This may include assessment of the positions of fired components, bullet trajectories, impact sites, areas of damage and the relative positions of individuals involved.
Our experts consider firearms evidence alongside scene findings, wound ballistics and witness accounts to reconstruct events and evaluate whether the evidence aligns with competing propositions.
Classification of Weapons and Ammunition

The classification of weapons and ammunition is a critical issue in many firearms cases and often requires detailed knowledge of firearms design, operation and legislation.
Our experts examine firearms and component parts to determine whether they meet the legal definition of a firearm, including consideration of antique firearms, obsolete calibres and the commercial availability of ammunition. Function testing and test firing may be undertaken to assess kinetic energy and compliance with relevant legislation.
Range of Fire and Trigger Pull Analysis

The interpretation of range of fire evidence can assist in determining the distance, orientation and position of a firearm at the time it was discharged. Examination of soot and powder deposition, strike marks and pellet patterns may be carried out in conjunction with weapon testing.
Trigger pull analysis can be critical in cases where it is alleged that a firearm was discharged accidentally or unintentionally. Our experts assess how a particular weapon operates and whether the technical characteristics of the firearm are consistent with the account provided.
