Chemical Enhancement and Acid Reagents – Law Enforcement

This chemical enhancement and acid reagents course is designed to provide an understanding of the theory and application of acid reagents at scenes. The course is a bespoke course, which means that police forces can tailor the modules of the course to their requirements.

The aims and objectives of this course is for delegates to:

  • Understand the theory and methods of application of acid reagents at scenes in different scenarios
  • Demonstrate practical ability in selection and application of acid reagents and comply with safety measures
  • Gain knowledge of scene attendance protocols and best practices
  • Gain insight and awareness into the forensic value of friction ridge detail

Course Topics

The Chemical Enhancement training can include:

  • Brief overview of fingerprints
  • Fingerprint comparison (HILS)
  • Introduction to CAST manual, enhancement techniques and strategy
  • International standards of practice UKAS 17025/17020, forensic regulator and code of conduct
  • Risk assessment and personal safety
  • Pre-scene tasks and considerations at scenes, including contamination issues
  • Discussion on scene notes and seizure of moveable items
  • Theory of acid reagents and methodology
  • Safe handling and storage of chemicals and COSHH
  • Application of acid reagents to recover footwear marks
  • Marking up area of FRD/FW
  • Demonstration of light sources
  • Practical demonstration and application of acid reagents in indoor scenes (floors, doors)
  • Practice to bloodied items
  • Application of acid reagents in outdoor scenes
  • Assessed scene work

The course will end with a written theory test (1 hour) to ensure that all delegates have understood the course content and leave with confidence in this forensic discipline.
