This 1-day course is suitable for individuals looking to pursue a career as a Crime Scene Investigator after academic studies or looking to change careers.

Our CSI trainers have designed this course specifically for individuals who do not work in police forces, but want to gain insight into the role of a Crime Scene Investigator! We invite you to go behind the crime scene tape to investigate, hypothesise and learn what it’s like to work in the field!

What will the day look like?

The agenda proceeds as follows:

  • TV versus reality
  • Searching a mock scene for evidence
  • An introduction to the role of the CSI
  • Answer ‘What does the job as a CSI involve?’
  • Practical sessions including lifting fingerprints.
  • Routes into the job and training
  • Expectations from courts and the Criminal Justice system
  • Real-life case studies

Course Topics

The main learning outcomes for this course:

  1. Provide an overview and explanation around the role of a Digital Media Investigator (DMI)
  2. How a DMI can improve the investigation and critical timings around evidential data loss
  3. Provide an overview of digital investigative strategies and how this can lead to traditional investigative enquiries

Some of the topics covered in the Digital Media Investigator course:

  • What is a DMI – Explanation of the creation of the DMI and where can they be beneficial.
  • The Role of a DMI – Descriptive of areas they can cover.
  • Crime Scene Attendance – When to consider using a DMI.
  • Wi-Fi Investigation – Explanation on how Wi-Fi can be utilised in investigations.
  • Advice and Guidance around the following areas (at scene): Overview to Computer systems, Storage Devices, Peripheral Devices, Mobile Phones & Handheld Devices and other sources of Digital Data
  • Communications Data – Overview of what can be achieved using communications data.
