Forensic Photography Training – Students

Unlike many photography courses, our forensic photography training has been developed specifically for evidential and investigative environments. Delivered by experienced Crime Scene Investigator Lisa Warwick, the course bridges the gap between academic learning and operational practice, helping students understand how photography is used to document crime scenes, capture evidence and support the criminal justice process.

Through a combination of classroom learning, practical exercises and realistic scenarios, delegates develop the technical knowledge and practical skills required to produce accurate, evidential-quality images. Every programme can be tailored to suit university modules, student experience levels, learning outcomes and available teaching time, providing an engaging and valuable addition to forensic science education.

Course Modules

Photography Workbook

Students complete pre-course learning to introduce key photographic terminology, camera equipment and the fundamental principles of evidential photography.

General Photography

Develop an understanding of camera operation, exposure, focus, metering, white balance, depth of field, flash and lighting techniques used within forensic photography.

Crime Scene Photography

Learn how to document internal and external crime scenes systematically, producing accurate photographic records that capture evidence and support investigations.

Marks, Vehicles and Exhibits

Develop techniques for photographing vehicles, exhibits and evidential marks, including fingerprints, footwear marks and tyre marks.

Technical Photography

Explore specialist techniques including injury photography, low-light and night photography, custody photography, and post-mortem photography where appropriate.

Assessment

Students demonstrate their understanding through written and practical assessments designed to reinforce learning outcomes and develop confidence in applying forensic photography techniques.

Do students need previous photography experience?

No. The course can be tailored for students with little or no previous photography experience, as well as those looking to further develop their practical forensic photography skills.

Do students need to bring their own camera equipment?

Yes. Students are required to bring their own camera equipment for the practical elements of the course. This allows them to develop confidence using their own equipment while applying forensic photography techniques in realistic scenarios.
