Forensic DNA analysis - an article taken from Forensic Access newsletter Checking forensic science examinations and opinions

Article taken from Issue 3 of the Forensic Access Newsletter "Benchmark"

Forensic Access provides a highly flexible, comprehensive package of casework-related services. These are mainly for lawyers setting out to test the accuracy and sustainability of scientific evidence adduced by the other side in criminal or civil cases.

Services usually start with a brief review of critical papers and free advice on appropriate ways forward – both in terms of scrutinising the science and reporting back to the client.

Scrutiny of the science can include any combination of the following:

  • re-examining the scene of crime or incident site
  • re-examining relevant items in the case
  • discussing the results of original tests on these items with the scientists involved, and checking records of analysis and any other information used as the basis for opinion
  • examining new items – using all analytical tests such as the latest DNA profiling techniques
  • conducting a paper exercise only.

Reporting options are similarly flexible and include:

  • a verbal report either by telephone or in conference – for instance in cases where the evidence is not amenable to dispute, or to agree what type of written report might be most appropriate
  • by letter, as a more formal means of recording the same thing
  • a short-form report where specific issues that might usefully be explored are highlighted
  • a comprehensive report where weaknesses in the evidence may have been identified. This report provides in-depth explanations and ensures that counsel is properly equipped to cross-examine confidently and effectively.

Other associated services include:

  • drafting briefing notes for counsel to use in court
  • giving expert oral evidence
  • providing immediate advice and support during oral evidence given by others.

By varying and carefully tailoring its services to what its clients want, Forensic Access provides lawyers with highly skilled and experienced forensic scientists at competitive prices.
