Dr Geoff Roe BSc, PhD
Specialism: forensic fibre and hair techniques
Geoff Roe joined Forensic Access as a consultant forensic biologist in 2004. Geoff was an operational senior scientist with the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory from 1971 until 1996, and then with the Forensic Science Service after the MPFSL was subsumed.
He specialises in investigating crimes of sex and violence, together with any type of crime in which biological material is involved.
Geoff has expertise in:
- The examination of crime scenes, especially murder scenes;
- The interpretation of bloodstain distribution patterns;
- Directing and conducting detailed laboratory work on exhibits and samples, including:
- the examination of textile and other fibres;
- the identification and comparison of human and animal hairs;
- the identification of plant materials, including wood;
- the comparison of paper, including the component fibres;
- the interpretation of damage to clothing and other items;
- the examination of weapons, blunt and sharp, and comparison with damage to clothing.
- the assessment of the significance of scientific findings in the context of the case;
- the preparation and presentation of both written and oral evidence to courts of law.
Having spent many years working in the Fibres Section of the MPFSL, Geoff’s favourite topic is the examination of textile fibres.
Geoff wrote the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science laboratory’s Hair Training Manual. This formed the basis for the Forensic Science Service’s quality document on forensic hair examination and training, which he co-wrote. He is an occasional external examiner for the Netherlands Forensic Science Institute in Forensic Hair Examination. Geoff’s research has been in human hair comparison procedures and he has published work on the detection of cosmetic treatments and had this and other work presented at international symposia.
